A 360 was never available in a CJ (only 304), and then I think they discontinued the V-8 CJ in 1978 or 79 My thought is a bad timing chain, letting the cam and spark timing walk around Pull the distributor cap and rock the crank back and forth and see haw many degrees it moves before the rotor moves
