极（拼音：jí）是汉语通用规范一级字（常用字）。极和它的繁体“極”原是音义都不同的两个字，繁体極始见于秦代篆书，形声兼会意字，从木亟声，亟兼表义。本义指房屋的正梁，又叫脊檩，是最高处的檩。“极（極）”由此有最高处的意义。
