chap (BrE informal becoming old-fashioned) Would you agree that only 50 [?] years ago this word was still in regular use, on the same footing as 'bloke'? W ould you say it was [ is] used by a particular class, or just everybody in "colloquial" speech? How would you define "my dear chap": 'patronizing' or what? Have you heard or read it recently?

Be aware that "bloke" and "chap" are almost never used in American English, and "lad" is rare in American English The use of "bloke" or "chap" would usually be a deliberate affectation to give a "British" air to what was being said

Chap is a quite genial way of referring to a man, it's not unkind It doesn't necessarily infer a strong liking but it does exclude strong dislike "Some chap cut in front of me in the queue" would express mild irritation at a stranger "Some chap in a bowler hat gave it to me" is a neutral comment about a stranger

The original expression, as far as I know, is that really chaps my hide I always imagined it to be an expression with cowboy origin In the 1980's I started hearing people say it as "that really chaps my ass" I agree with k-in-sc that "chaps my khakis" is just a variant on the old expression Also, keep in mind that "khakis" are pants, so there is an indirect reference to the backside hide
