- Supplementing VTSAX with small-cap index (VSIAX or VSMAX)
Hi all, I'm curious if anyone supplements their VTSAX holdings with small amounts of VSMAX (Small Cap Index) or VSIAX (Small Cap Value Index) I know many folks like sticking with just VTSAX for the simplicity, but if I am willing to add a little complexity it seems that adding a higher proportion of small cap stocks to the total market index could boost annualized returns a bit

- Approximating total stock market
Vanguard Small-Cap Index Fund - Admiral Shares, VSMAX, 0 09% ER I'm currently only in VINIX for my US equities According to the linked article, I should go 81% VINIX and 19% VIEIX to approximate the total stock market I could also go 82% VINIX 18% VSMAX, but VSMAX is less diversified and has a higher ER than VIEIX
- VIMAX to VTSAX? or not? What would you do - Mr. Money Mustache
You do not buy VIMAX instead of VTSAX because you want higher return; you buy it because you want to own mid-cap US stocks instead of the total market The only reason to swap out VIMAX for VTSAX is if you decide you want to own large-cap and small-cap stocks too (but you could also accomplish that by keeping VIMAX and just adding VFIAX and VSMAX)
- How to recreate VTSAX with VFIAX VIMAX VSMAX?
I know it is pretty much splitting hairs, and I think I've heard before that VTSAX is mostly the S P500 by weight (70-80%?), but is there a way to get a rough recreation of VTSAX through a combination of VFIAX, VIMAX, and VSMAX? The latter three are options in my company's 401k with no VTSAX option

- Any issues with using Merrill Edge for purchasing Vanguard ETFs?
Does anyone see issues with purchasing and holding Vanguard ETFs using Merrill Edge (while still holding comparable index funds directly with Vanguard)? - VITSX vs VFIAX - Mr. Money Mustache
Small-cap companies make up something like 3% If you want more small and mid-cap exposure, consider buying a fund which exclusively holds those companies (e g VSMAX) and adjusting your assett allocation that way The following is a link the a Morningstar report that reflects investment percentage by market cap in the Vanguard total market index
