- Mike Mills from REM bass gear? | Page 3 | TalkBass. com
In the really early days of R E M , Mike Mills played a Höfner 500 1 with the "toaster" style pickups After that, he got the aforementioned Ampeg Dan Armstrong bass, which I'm almost 100% sure is what was used on the 1981 "Radio Free Europe" Hib-Tone single

What do you think of Mike Mills of REM? I used to really love their early stuff But listening back again (after playing bass myself), his playing kind of surprises me There is something unusual about it His tone is kind of unusual too, being kind of high and prominent with his Rickenbacker His approach is something I don't understand

Good to hear some mention of Mike Mills I love early REM and some of those simple but melodic basslines I don't know if they were played on a P, but when I got my first bass (P-J) recently and put the P pickup on full, it instantly felt perfect for those nice bass intros to 'Old Man Kensey' and 'Cuyahoga'

Mike Mills has always been one of my favorite bass players Sure, he doesn't play 32nd note fusion wanks on an 11 string bass; as a matter of fact, he hasn't done much of anything except co-write, sing, and play creative bass on some of the best songs of the last 20 years!
- Underrated bassist: Mike Mills - TalkBass. com
One of the CDs happened to be REM "And I feel fine The best of the IRS years 1982 to 1987" The songs brought back some memories But I was very impressed with Mike Mills' playing and tone He had some very interesting complex bass lines Needless to say it was a very enjoyable long trip BTW what bass did Mike play at this time?

When I saw R E M in the late '80s, Mike played a Rickenbacker and an Ibanez Roadstar (P-J pickups, rosewood fingerboard) through two Mesa Boogie Bass 400s driving two 2x15 cabinets I've seen pictures from the early days with the Rick through a Fender Dual Showman too

REM were the last band I was really into to the point of buying all their albums and anxiously awaiting each new release There was more mystery about bands in the pre-internet days and the lyrics (that you could understand), the delivery, and the spare, arpeggiated guitar chiming away with Mills' strong, melodic counterpoint really grabbed me
- What makes this sound so special? REMs Laughing (Murmur)
'Laughing' is hands down one of my favorite Mike Mills basslines His tone on this and '7Chinese Bros' are my go to tones I get pretty close to the opening sound with my 4003 w Bartolini pickups by boosting my mids a bit on a Mesa Walkabout
- Mike Mills R. E. M. - TalkBass. com
Before I played bass back in the 1980's R E M was one of my favorite bands Wasn't until the late 1990's when I started playing bass that I realized how good a bass player he was Mills with R E M video
